Ever since Barcelona hosted the 1992 Olympic Games it has become one of the most visited cities and a very popular tourist destination. Barcelona received huge sums of money from the European community and this helped with the infrastructure of the city and got it moving for the first time in years. Below I’ve noted 10 reasons why the city of Barcelona is worth visiting today.
1. The weather in Barcelona is usually quite mild with eight to nine months of sunshine a year which means that even though you cannot guarantee the best of weather on your trip, there is a pretty good chance of fine weather.
2. The city of Barcelona happens to be on the coast and there are miles of that stretch all the way down to the quaint town of Sitges as well as going north towards France. The main beach of Barcelona is divided into smaller ones and each one attracts a different crowd.
3. If you love Spanish tapas then you might want to enjoy some of the tapas in bars in the city of Barcelona. There are many bars in Barcelona where you can enjoy tapas and one of my favourite tapas has to be patatas bravas which are thickly cut fried potatoes with ali oli – delicious.
4. FCB or Barcelona football club are one of the top clubs in the world and by going to Barcelona you can try and get tickets for one of FC Barcelona’s home games, whether it be in the league, Champions league or La Copa del Rey. Barcelona has many great players including Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernández and Andrés Iniesta and watching these players perform is a real delight. Day tours of the Nou Camp are also very worthwhile and one of the highlights is the trophy room which cannot be missed.
5. The main harbour as well as the marina area is a nice area to stroll around and have a drink which is near the centre of Barcelona. The aquarium, the IMAX 3D cinema and restaurants are also worth a visit in this area.
6. Barcelona is famous for its Gaudi buildings and La Sagrada Familia is one place which is well worth visiting. This church has already taken over 100 years to build and it is estimated that around another 100 years is needed for its completion. Seeing some of the work of this nineteenth century architect is well worth it if you get the chance to. Other examples include La Pedrera, La Casa Batllò and of course the famous Parc Guell.
7. Barcelona’s many and varied bars can be worth a visit especially on a hot day and also double as great places to meet the locals and enjoy a Spanish beer. San Miguel, Cruzcampo and a great Catalan beer called Estrella by the Damm brewery.
8. Flamenco – although not very Catalan, there happens to be an annual Flamenco festival in Barcelona every summer and this can be a fun festival to attend if you get the chance to.
9. Barcelona’s restaurants – The restaurants of Barcelona attract many people and there are so many restaurants that you will have a hard choice making your mind up. Try the seafood or local Catalan cuisine such as Esqueixada de Bacallà: An exquisite salad elaborated with cod, tomatoes, onions, olives, hard boiled eggs and peppers or Butifarra amb Mongetes: Typical sausages, beans, garlic and parsley.
10. Adventure sports in Barcelona – Barcelona is fast becoming a great place to try events such as hot air ballooning, kayaking and dragon boat racing. With Barcelona’s great climate it’s an ideal place to try such activities.
Discover this charming Catalan city, book that weekend break and rent apartments in Barcelona for your stay. You won’t regret it!
