Barcelona: a big capital that can also be a small town

What happens when we first hear the words Barcelona? Surely we think of words like Gaudi, Sagrada Familia, the beach, paella, tapas and sun. But we also think about tourists, traffic, garbage, and we’ll surely think of a big city. The fact that Barcelona is the largest city in Catalonia, with over 1.6 million inhabitants, gives us the impression that the city is full of people and does not give us a breathing space. But we are quite wrong because Barcelona is a city that still amazes me – I’m a student from a small town in Germany where there are more cows than people, I love it and you’d love it too!
If you are lucky enough to be in Barcelona, either for a short trip of a day or longer than 2 years, you do not need much time to get used to living in a big city because Barcelona can also be a small town. If you have your daily life, often going through the same streets, shopping in these supermarkets, very often you may find that you’re in the middle of this big city and you bump into your hairdresser or your baker, who sells you bread every morning. It’s a small world!
Few people know that Barcelona is in principle a group of towns. The existing neighbourhoods were actually smaller towns, each one with its different characteristics. Barceloneta, for example, was a typical fishing village and yet still retains its spirit and maritime feel. The Roman origins of the city can still be seen in the Gothic quarter. The Born area was the economic nerve centre of the city between the XIII and XV and Poblesec for example, became in the mid-twentieth century a small city similar to Paris where cabarets, theatres and cafes flourished.
The small town spirit has carried on throughout virtually every neighbourhood. Today you’ll still find the local market and a fishmonger amongst other trades. Don’t think that because you live in a big city there is no room for nature. Barcelona also has some wonderful parks where you can spend a few hours without thinking about your job or your problems. Take your favourite book to the Parc de la Ciutadella, get yourself a comfortable place, relax, and discover another world. Barcelona can offer you as nature; flowers and birds singing also have their place in the capital of Catalonia.
There are many things that make you feel very comfortable and each one can find their own space in this great and small city. Discover this little big capital, feel like Heidi did in a cosmopolitan city and rent an apartments in Barcelona.
