It’s nearing 1am. The crowd has swollen. Delay of ritual: Never a good idea. Wires strung round the necks and wrists and legs of the dancing girls are being checked. Firecrackers are being slipped under their costumes. Applause rise and fall in the streets, half to keep our pulses strong, half to induce the explosion.
